I may be wrong but I'd heard the problems are primarily with pitches in the US. Apparently they didn't clean the rubber properly that they used in the little rubber balls whereas over here they did.
Does an ipitch have those little rubber balls? I know 3G pitches do but not sure about ipitches.
The "G" business means very little beyond 2G and 3G from what I've read.
As far as I know the Widnes pitch is a 3G style with added enhancements for Rugby (padding underneath etc) but the rubber balls with fake grass is more or less the same. I believe it's very similar to the one Saracens use.
I also read the risk comes from over ingestion of certain chemicals that may be present in the rubber.
Whether that's true of the rubber used in all 3G (and above) pitches, I'm not sure.
